These groups hope that if large fossil fuel projects can’t get insurance, they can’t be built or operated.
This tactic recently proved successful, when the insurer Chubb stopped backing the East African Crude Oil Pipeline, A.K.A. EACOP, following protests against the company including at their Manchester offices.
The main insurance broker for EACOP, Marsh, was also present at the BIBA conference.
These protests come after a period of successive extreme weather events hit Greater Manchester, from New Year’s floods to multiple moorland fires so far this Spring.
Martin Porter, a spokesperson for the protestors, said: “BIBA needs to decide if ‘A New Era’ means floods, fires, heat waves, and climate chaos, or one where brokers refuse to cover carbon bomb projects.”
