This week, 3 – 9 June is Indie News Week, and today we’re launching our crowdfunder to grow our publication and produce more of the independent local journalism that Greater Manchester needs.
It coincides with the launch of our election podcast series, which you can also be a part of. In the run-up to the general election, we’re heading out to all ten boroughs to hear what locals have to say about the campaign and what they think of the candidates.
You can also find out more about who’s behind our work and what goes into accurately and fairly covering the stories that matter in Manchester.
And those stories are your stories. We think that local news should reflect the communities it serves. We’ll be recording conversations (with your consent) for a podcast episode that we’ll release on our SoundCloud the following day.
We’ll be using the responses to inform our future work, and as a springboard for our Crowdfunder – because good journalism doesn’t pay for itself, and bad journalism’s got plenty of investors.
We try to avoid clickbait, we don’t recycle news stories from other regions, and our website isn’t covered in ads and pop-ups. That’s because we’re funded by our community and we’re accountable to them, not big advertisers.
Independent news outlets like ours – owned by the community and reporting for the community– are under threat of closure, turning British towns into news deserts. The audiences they serve know less, understand less, and can do less. If our coverage has helped you understand our community a little bit better, please consider supporting us with a donation.
Our crowdfunder is open from today until 7 July – a full month after the end of Indie News Week. You can donate here or just speak to us if you see us in town and we’ll give you the details.
If you love what we do, you can become a member of our media co-op. This gives you a share in the business and a say in the work we do. This Indie News Week is about listening to what our community wants, and introducing purselves to the community – and if you join you can make your voice really count.
