Events and actions taking place this month.

October brings with it a host of events to keep you busy, from dancefloor fundraisers to creative workshops. Highlights include celebrations for this year’s Black History Month, along with the 80th anniversary of the 1945 Pan-African Congress. The historic event took place in Manchester’s Chorlton-on-Medlock Town Hall, marking a key moment in the global fight against colonialism and racial injustice.

4 OCT 88, The Untold Story of a Revolution book tour: Kate Magic, Dave Haslam and Paul Martin at Soup, Manchester, Soup, Manchester: ‘88: The Untold Story of a Revolution’ is the latest book from DJ and writer Kate Magic reclaiming the ecstatic, political, and spiritual roots of the UK rave movement. Iconic Haçienda DJ resident and author Dave Haslam and former co-founder of Talkin’ Loud imprint Paul Martin will speak alongside Kate Magic for immersive conversations on the UK rave movement and its local and national impact.

5 OCT Opera Omnia by Space Afrika and Valentin Noujaïm, Aviva Studios, Manchester: Electronic music duo Space Afrika join forces with filmmaker Valentin Noujaïm for new film project Opera Omnia, performed live with Manchester Camerata.

7 OCT Breaking Ground: Scratch Night, Waterside Arts, Trafford: A relaxed evening of new work in development theatre and performance, plus a chance to share your thoughts about the work.

9 OCT renae x Eat Well Fundraiser, renae, Manchester: A club night raising funds for meals in the community with Eat Well MCR, is a Manchester-based collective of chefs, restaurants and volunteers providing meals to people experiencing poverty, homelessness, or crisis.

11 OCT Altrincham Unity, The Green Room, Trafford: A Love Music Hate Racism event featuring music from Sargasso Township, Michael Welton, Parlaiz and poets.

30 OCT Breaking Barz, Aviva Studios, Manchester: A night of live music from Breaking Barz, headliner Misha B and some of Manchester’s finest artists, celebrating the life and legacy of Manchester’s uncrowned boxing champion Len Johnson.


Think, Discover, Learn

5 OCT Carnival: The Art of Rebellion, Aviva Studios, Manchester: Join Roy Alexander Weise MBE for a whistle stop historic tour of the Caribbean Carnival, its roots, its presence in the UK and beyond. Take part in lectures, make your own carnival costume and take part in a parade to celebrate Black Excellence and Pride.

10 OCT Do It Yourself: Making Political Theatre, Contact, Manchester: This talk by Evie Manning and Prof. Jenny Hughes of Common/Wealth will share how they started as a DIY company, the shows they have made along the way and why making political theatre is critical and urgent now more than ever.

17 OCT Archives in Solidarity: 80th anniversary of the Manchester Pan-African Congress, People’s History Museum, Salford: Join the People’s History Museum for an evening of archive exploration, reflection and solidarity to mark this globally significant conference.

22 OCT Remembering the Bengal Famine of 1943, Manchester Museum: Manchester Museum and the History Department of The University of Manchester, in collaboration with the Imperial War Museum North, are hosting a memorial event to commemorate the victims of the Bengal Famine 1943, joined by BBC journalist Kavita Puri, creator of the landmark BBC podcast Three Million, which has inspired this event.

25 OCT 80 Years On: Honouring the Legacy of the 5th Pan-African Congress – Manchester Museum, Manchester Museum: In collaboration with Uplift, Manchester Museum marks the 80th anniversary of the historic 5th Pan-African Congress in Manchester, a landmark moment in the struggle against colonialism and for global Black liberation.


Connect, Organise, Celebrate

2 OCT Community Explorers and Soup event, Hattersley, Tameside: This event invites Hattersley based groups, charities and not for profit organisations to present and possibly win some money towards their group or project. All attendees will need to pay £3 per adult which goes into the pot, and will then be won by one of the groups. Lunch will be provided.

7 OCT Autumn Volunteer Fair, Oldham Library: This is an opportunity for attendees to browse stalls, collect information, speak to local groups about their services and volunteering opportunities in the Oldham area.

9-12 OCT The World Transformed 2025, Hulme, Manchester: A national gathering to strategise and co-ordinate action, over 120 sessions from Thursday evening to Sunday night.

11 OCT Black History Month Gala & Awards, Altrincham, Trafford: The Caribbean & African Health Network invites you to its Black History Month Gala 2025, a black-tie event bringing together individuals, organisations, and businesses to honour the achievements and contributions of the Caribbean and African communities.

23 OCT 8th Annual Black History Month Celebration, MIddleton Area, Rochdale: Join Caring and Sharing Rochdale to celebrate Black History Month with a night of music, food, and community, around the theme ‘Standing Firm in Power & Pride’.
